Methyl acetate, also known as MeOAc, acetic acid methyl ester or methyl ethanoate, is a carboxylate. It is a flammable liquid with a characteristically pleasant smell reminiscent of some glues and nail polish removers. Methyl acetate is a volatile solvent.
Applications
It is therefore used in fast-drying paints and for the manufacture of celluloid adhesives from waste film. Methyl acetate is often used in lacquer solutions to lower the viscosity. Methyl acetate may also be used in perfumery and in dye manufacture. A major use of methyl acetate is as a volatile low toxicity solvent in glues, paints, and nail polish removers.
